Why I Created the 30-Day Contentment Reset

For a very long time, I believed that peace was something I would experience “someday”.

Someday, when life slowed down.

Someday, when work becomes less demanding.

Someday, when everything on my to-do list was finally finished.

But someday always seemed to escape me.

Someday just never seemed to arrive.

Instead, I found myself rushing from one responsibility to another, constantly trying to keep up while quietly feeling emotionally drained.

I wasn’t just tired.

I was yearning for a different way to live.

That realization changed everything.

The Lesson That Changed My Life

I was a classroom teacher for 26 years. Many of those years I spent feeling overwhelmed. It seemed as though there were not enough hours in the day to complete all the tasks required for my job. There was always something that needed to be graded, planned, documented, submitted, or prepared. As soon as I checked one task off my list, another one was waiting to take its place. People do not always realize the time constraints teachers face or how much happens behind the scenes, all while being fully present and responsible for the students in their classrooms.

I did not have a healthy work-life balance, and eventually, I became depleted. I was tired, but not the kind of tired that a good night’s sleep could fix. I was mentally and emotionally exhausted. I had become so accustomed to pushing through that I did not realize how much of myself I was giving away just trying to keep up.

Then the world shut down because of COVID-19.

Like teachers across the country, I suddenly found myself working from home. Life as I knew it had come to an abrupt stop, and for the first time in a long time, I had space to really think about how I had been living.

I have to admit, I am not afraid of many things, but COVID-19 scared me. There was so much uncertainty, and it forced me to think deeply about life, time, and my place in the world. I began asking myself questions I had been too busy to ask before.

Was I actually enjoying my life, or was I simply getting through it?

The answer was difficult to admit.

I realized that I had not really been living. I had been existing, moving from one responsibility to another, always waiting for the elusive someday.

Someday I will have more time.

Someday I will slow down.

Someday I would do more of the things I enjoy.

Someday I would finally make myself a priority.

But what if someday never came?

That realization changed something in me. I began to understand that I did not have to wait for someday. I had spent enough of my life postponing peace and believing I would get to it after everything else was done.

Someday could begin now.

Slowly, my perspective started to change. I began looking into retirement and imagining what my life could look like if I stopped measuring it by how much I accomplished and started paying attention to how I actually felt while living it.

Then, not long afterward, I experienced a health issue that solidified everything I had begun to understand during COVID. It reminded me once again that time is precious and that constantly postponing the life you want to live comes with a cost.

That season of my life taught me a lesson I carry with me today:

Peace isn’t found; peace is practiced.

I used to think peace was something I would eventually arrive at once everything was finished, everyone else was taken care of, and life finally settled down. Now I understand that there will always be something to do. There will always be responsibilities, unexpected problems, and seasons that demand more from us.

If we wait for life to become perfect before allowing ourselves to experience peace, we may spend our entire lives waiting.

And the same is true of contentment.

Contentment isn’t a destination; it’s a daily decision.

It is choosing gratitude when it would be easier to focus on what is missing. It is choosing rest when the to-do list says you should keep going. It is choosing boundaries when saying yes would cost you your peace. It is choosing to be present instead of constantly waiting for the next accomplishment, the next season, or the next someday.

Contentment is a decision you make again and again and again.

And perhaps the most important lesson I learned is this:

You do not have to wait for someday to start living a life that feels good to live.

Why I Created This Reset

I didn’t create this reset because my life became perfect. I created it because I learned, little by little, what helped me begin finding my way back to peace.

There was no single moment when everything changed. It was a series of small choices—slowing down, becoming more intentional with my time, setting boundaries, practicing gratitude, making room for rest, and learning to pay attention to what I needed instead of constantly pushing through.

As I began making these changes, I noticed something important: my circumstances did not have to be perfect for me to experience contentment.

I created it because I learned what helped me find contentment, and I wanted to share this with others who may be struggling like I was.
