Contentment is Built One Choice at a Time
Many people spend their lives searching for contentment.
They believe they will finally be at peace when some great achievement happens in their life.
They think when they buy the house, get the promotion, lose weight, retire, or finally have everything they have ever wanted, they will be content.
But contentment doesn’t suddenly arrive when you think your life is perfect.
It grows quietly by the choices we make every single day.
Like when you choose to have a growth mindset, start a hobby, go back to school, allow your child to participate in sports- small, deliberate choices that shape the person you are today.
Our choices can determine whether we grow to be all that we can be or never reach our full potential. A poor choice made at 18 can derail your future, while a wise one can set you up for a bright future.
Every decision either moves you closer to peace or farther away from it.
The beautiful thing is that we don’t have to change our entire life today.
Your choices matter. So, you simply have to make the better choice and keep making those choices again and again.
What is Contentment?
What is contentment? It can be defined as a feeling of happiness and satisfaction when one’s wishes have been realized. People often feel content or experience satisfaction when a goal has been achieved or when they have acquired a tangible asset of value to them. A person is satisfied when an expectation has been met and desired results are realized.
True contentment is fulfilled even when dreams have not been realized, even when life did not turn out as planned, and even if you never achieve all your goals. Many people achieve all their dreams and yet lack peace and contentment. To achieve the peace and contentment one desires, you must learn to be satisfied with life but not complacent. It does not mean giving up on your dreams. It means being at peace while you are striving to make them happen. Being tied to the outcome of the realization of your dreams but realizing that life happens to all of us.
Being content is appreciating today while still working toward tomorrow.
It says I am enough, I have enough, and this moment matters.
10 Daily Choices That Create a More Content Life
- Begin Your Day with Gratitude
When I open my eyes, the first thing I say is thank you. Whatever your belief system is, you should be grateful that you lived to see a new day. So, before you reach for your phone, before you start your day, take the time to acknowledge that there are people who wanted to see this day but didn’t.Then shift your perspective to all the other things you have to be grateful for.
When you have an attitude of gratitude, it is difficult not to be content. You are too busy being grateful for all you do have instead of worrying about what you don’t, and while you may yearn for greater, you don’t let it cloud your today.
So many people walk around bitter about life’s failures instead of recognizing that while life may not have turned out the way they planned, there is always something to be grateful for. We can be grateful for the opportunity to be alive, a beautiful sunset, a child’s milestone, or a roof over our heads.
“Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want, but the realization of how much you already have.”
A grateful heart is a content heart.
- Choose Peace Over Perfection
Procrastination is a habit of many people. Sometimes at the root of this is a need to try and do things perfectly. Perfectionism can cost you peace of mind.
We must let go of the idea that everything must be perfect before we can begin a project, clean the house, or start a new feat. “If you look for perfection, you’ll never be content.” Always choose peace over perfection.
If you reach your goal, and one thing made the achievement imperfect, do you not celebrate the goal you achieved? Absolutely not, celebrate the milestone achieved and let go of perfectionism. It not only robs you of peace but also of the joy of special moments.
It is said, “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.” We all should strive forexcellence, but excellence and perfection are two separate ideals. Stop chasing impossible standards.
This does not mean we should not be excellent at what we are trying to achieve; we should always strive to do our absolute best by giving our utmost attention to our goals. But we should strive for excellence, not perfection. Do not let the idea of perfection stop you from reaching your goals because there is no such thing as perfection.
No perfect person.
No perfect job.
No perfect world.
Perfection is the perfect lie.
- Protect Your Peace
Peace can be elusive if you do not set healthy boundaries. To protect your peace, you must protect your energy.
In order to protect your peace, do the following: 1. Stop giving everything and everyone access to you, 2. Set Boundaries without guilt, 3. Limit the noise you consume, 4. Create moments of stillness, 5. Protect your mind from comparison, 6. Stop carrying what does not belong to you, 7. Give yourself permission to rest, and 8. Build a life that supports peace.
To expound on these ideas, read the posts How to Protect Your Peace in a World That Constantly Demands Your Attention and How to Protect Your Energy and Set Healthy Boundaries.
You must protect your peace at all costs.
- Spend Less Time Looking at Everyone Else’s Life
Comparison is the thief of joy. Comparing your life to others’ lives may leave you feeling like you haven’t achieved enough. You may feel you don’t have the picture-perfect family, material possessions, or enough money. Social Media will have you looking at others’ highlight reels when in all actuality, it doesn’t represent what is going on below the surface.
Comparison steals contentment.
Being grateful for who you are and with what you have will always lead to contentedness. Learn to be content in whatever state you find yourself. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t strive for greater; contentedness does not equal complacency. It says, I am grateful for what I have while I strive for more.
You are on your own timeline. What is for you will always be for you. You will have and achieve what you need according to divine timing.
You are exactly where you need to be until greater comes. Don’t allow someone else’s life to make you feel discontent about your own.
Don’t despise your current situation because of comparison.
- Rest Before You Are Completely Exhausted
So many of us are used to running on empty. Our levels are so low that we become completely exhausted, but you can’t pour from an empty cup. We are not good to ourselves or others when we operate in a state of exhaustion.
Being your best self requires rest. The type of rest that gives you peace, not just sleep. You must choose to make time for rest. It is a choice that will support you during challenging times and during times when everything is going right.
Rest so you can be there for yourself and your loved ones in a way that gives the very best part of who you are.
- Find Joy in Ordinary Moments
We don’t have to spend a lot of money to have joy. We can find joy in ordinary moments of life. Some of the times I have felt the most content was when I took time to appreciate what we call the little things; the ordinary.
Have you ever awakened to birds chirping and appreciated the song they were singing? Or recognized the beauty of a sunrise or a sunset? Appreciated the laughter at a family dinner? Enjoyed a walk in nature or the first sip of a morning coffee?
There is so much we can find joy in that does not have to cost us a thing. There is beauty all around us. We just have to take the time to appreciate these small moments and find joy in what they offer our lives.
- Practice Letting Go
Some people hold on to everything. They become bitter because they are holding on to the things they should let go of. They hold on to pain, resentment, past mistakes, control, and other people’s opinions.
Pain and resentment can stop you from growing and cloud your view of the world. If you are always looking at the world through a blurry lens, you will not be able to see its beauty. We cannot change past mistakes or other people’s opinions, but we can choose to let go of resentment, pain, and control to have a life filled with peace, joy, and contentment.
It is not until you decide to let go of the weight that holds you down that you will be able to blossom into all you were meant to be.

- Be Fully Present
Our phones, tablets, and computers have become central to our lives. Often, it causes us to not be fully present in the lives of our loved ones and friends.
There is nothing like going out to dinner and seeing everyone at the table on their phones instead of engaging with one another. They are together but not present.
We must be cognizant of the fact that being fully present requires our commitment to engage with others in a meaningful way.
It will require us to put down our phones and truly spend quality time with those who we love. Giving our time is the most precious thing we can give others because time is irreplaceable.
When you give others your time, you tell them I am here, I am present, and I see you.
- End Your Day with Reflection
How we end our day can help us have a peaceful rest. Ruminating on the day’s worries and problems can cause us to be anxious when we should be preparing for rest. So, we must be intentional about how we end our day.
Ending our day in a way that allows us to be calm and peaceful is paramount for good sleep. There are practices that we can do to prepare us for rest. Some of the things we can do are journaling, reading, prayer, and writing in a gratitude journal. Each of these practices allows our minds to transition into a state of peace and calm while ending the day.
When you end your day, ask yourself, what brought me peace today?
- Celebrate Small Victories
We always want to celebrate huge accomplishments. Like graduating from college, getting a promotion, getting married, and having children, but what about those small wins?
Celebrating small victories counts too. We cannot overlook daily progress. It is those small wins that lead to our big wins.
We need to celebrate things like choosing rest when we are exhausted instead of working until we are forced to rest. Celebrate getting through a difficult day, going to the gym, saying no to protect our peace, or simply cooking dinner when we are exhausted.
Remember, those victories count too.
Small Choices Become Your Life
Habits become routines.
Routines become lifestyles.
Lifestyles become your life.
You do not accidentally have peace and contentment.
You cultivate peace and choose contentment.
